They act as go-between for the customer, mechanic, and an auto dealer. The major part of their duties includes customer satisfaction and customer relations. They are ultimately the individual who is responsible for productivity and profitability of the service department. Part of this responsibility includes sales, and keeping all customer service records.
The service manager is also responsible for the safety concerns pertaining to the maintenance of all customer vehicles. This requires that they oversee all aspects of mechanical operations to assure that the service provided is at the highest level of quality. Every automobile serviced by the automotive department must be inspected by the automotive service manager or his representative prior to returning the automobile to the customer.
The automotive service manager needs to focus on all that’s required of him at all times. They’re responsible for all aspects pertaining to service department personnel, including hiring and supervising. This includes maintaining all employee files and documenting any discrepancies and also being responsible for reviews and raise considerations.
The auto service manager reports to the dealer or the sales manager and must report to them all situations that pertain to the department, including their proficiency and ability to reach the goals set by the dealership for the department. Part of this process includes creating and running a sales plan. They have to not only mange all current business but must be involved in the recruitment of all new customers. This can include individuals in the community with cars that were not sold by the dealer.
All vehicle manufacturers provide warranties on new automobiles. It is the responsibility of the automotive service manager to be up-to-date on all the information pertaining to warranties and provide this information to his staff. They must also keep track of any recall that might have been set forth by the automotive manufacturer.
An individual who gets hired for this position will usually have an extensive mechanical background, preferably with the dealer or at least in the line of vehicles the dealer sells and services. This experience is pertinent to understanding the full realm of the job and its responsibilities. Being familiar with the line of automobiles carried by the dealer helps greatly in their capability to complete the tasks of the job.

The Automotive Service Management is in charge of all tasks that pertain to the service center. This includes supervision of all staff for the department and also includes customer service. The Automotive Service Management Team must be knowledgeable of all mechanical related tasks and must be kept informed of all service warranties being provided by the manufacturer. They must also keep the staff up to date on this information.
