Automotive Service Managers - Find The Right Person For The Job

An automotive service manager is responsible for overseeing the service department of an automotive dealer. They are the liaison between the mechanic and the customer and consequently are responsible for creating and maintaining a loyal customer base and are also responsible for assuring the automotive dealer that the service department is operating efficiently and productively. This position is also typically responsible for obtaining sales and profit in the department and maintaining service records for all customers.

The service manager is also responsible for the safety concerns pertaining to the maintenance of all customer automobiles. This requires that they oversee all aspects of mechanical operations to assure that the service provided is at the highest level of quality. Every vehicle serviced by the automotive department must be inspected by the automotive service manager or his representative prior to returning the car to the customer.

The manager must be detail-oriented, particularly in the area of mechanical operations. They will be expected to be able to perform numerous duties simultaneously. They also hire, fire and cover all aspects of employee supervision of the department. Part of these duties includes handling the processing and maintaining of all employee files. They also determine if an employee should be reprimanded or if they have earned a raise.

The service manager ensures the dealer at the service department obtains the goals of the dealership as they pertain to the budget. In many cases, they might be expected to create and monitor a marketing plan that involves the creation of current and recurring business. For many automotive dealers service, customers typically consist of individuals who have purchased cars in the dealer. You might also be required to generate this information from outside the current clientele.

All car manufacturers provide warranties on new cars. It is the responsibility of the automotive service manager to be up-to-date on all the information pertaining to warranties and provide this information to his staff. They have to also keep track of any recall that might have been set forth by the automotive manufacturer.

An individual who gets hired for this position will usually have an extensive mechanical background, preferably with the dealer or at least in the line of cars the dealer sells and services. This experience is pertinent to understanding the full realm of the job and its responsibilities. Being familiar with the line of vehicles carried by the dealer helps greatly in their capability to complete the tasks of the job.

Most dealers pay this position nicely. This might, in many cases, include a nice benefits package. Many service dealers are also provided with a demo automobile. This position is typically very attractive to the mechanic who has worked for the dealer for a number of years.

The Automotive Service Manager is the individual who is responsible for overseeing all operations of the automotive service department for a automobile dealer. As such, they are responsible for all personnel related duties, customer service relations and maintaining up-to-date information on all new vehicles and their service warranties. The Automotive Service Management Team is also responsible for all training of service department staff including updating them on information pertaining to new models that are being manufactured by the manufacturer.
